It’s been a while since I last posted, so I thought I’d give a quick update of where things stand. (TLDR: I’m still here, progress is slow, but it is happening.)

Crawling out of the swamp
It’s been a while since my last post, and will probably be a little longer before I get back into any regular schedule, but I’m still here. My last general post I mentioned that I had been dealing with a serious illness in my family. Sadly that culminated in spending pretty much the entirety of the holidays at the hospital, and ultimately with the passing of my mother in the first week of January. Needless to say it has seriously affected my motivation to do things, and I pretty much crawled under a rock for a few weeks. With that said, I’m starting to feel the itch again so more is coming, I’m not out yet.
So for those of you who have been regularly checking back, thank you for sticking around. I promise more content is coming, just may be a little longer. My time is limited for the next few months though as I am selling my home here and preparing to move, as well as handing various family affairs as a result of my mothers passing. In the meantime I have managed to chip away at the backlog a bit in my spare moments when I felt motivated, and more recently I tackled on a new format, which I hope to post about in the next little while.
One final request, if you can, please consider donating blood to your local blood bank. My mother had AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia), and if it wasn’t for blood transfusions she wouldn’t have survived for as long as she did as she was fighting to try and defeat it. While she ultimately lost her battle and it ended far sooner than we liked, we did get to spend one last Christmas together because of transfusions. So for those of you that already do donate… thank you!

Rumours of my demise have been greatly exaggerated
Sorry for the silence everyone. It’s been a tough ride the past while. I have been dealing with a serious illness with a member of my family, and have spent most of my time and energy helping there. As a result I have not had the energy, or inspiration, to make any new posts which take a lot of time to do. Rest assured I have been, in the background, doing quite a bit of work with some outstanding items that we’ve already covered, as well as some new ones we haven’t seen yet. More is coming, just might be slow in making it here. Lots of loose ends I want to tie up, as well as a list of new formats that I’m excited to start looking deeper into. In the meantime please bear with me as I try to find a balance between work, family, life, and blogging. As a result this one is going to just be a quickie, about a new (to me) reverse engineering tool I’ve started to use, and thought some of you might be interested in it too. If you don’t already use it. (wouldn’t surprise me that I’m late to the party on this)

Up! Up, and away!
This post is just a follow up to my previous post about there being some unexpected downtime as a result of a RAID failure. Well I have good news, the RAID data has been recovered, all 6TB of it. A new Open-ZFS based RAID is up and running in its place, as well as a proper backup strategy. So now even if the RAID goes down, my recovery time will be quicker and less stressful. So with that we should start getting back to some of the regular content we had in progress here already. Though as it is still summer, the frequency of posts will still be lower than what it was prior to the RAID failure. I’m going to do my best to try and make 2 posts per week, so we’ll see how it goes. Thanks to all those that reached out and offered support, and to those that subscribed to the blog to keep up to date. I have quite a few new formats queued up on the bench, so once we wrap up with the current batch we will get going on those, should be some exciting discoveries to come.

Unexpected downtime
Things will be a bit slow here on the blog for the next little while. Firstly my RAID appears to have died, it’s an issue with the logic board, and not the drives or the data, so I can get it back one way or another. I’m working on getting a new NAS or DAS RAID box along with a doner unit that is the same model I have so I can use that to recover my data onto the new RAID box. All my content and notes are on it, so until I get it back up and running the posts I had planned on will be delayed. Secondly it’s summer and I want to get out and enjoy it a bit before the cold returns. I live in Canada where the summers are short, and the winters are long, have to take advantage while I can. And finally, I’m also preparing to sell my house, and I need to devote more time to getting that done. (patching, panting, decluttering, all that fun) This blogging thing has taken up way more time than I had planned, though I am enjoying it and plan to continue doing it… but priorities have to prevail. So for all these reasons things will be a bit quieter around here. I will still post but not as often as I have been the last few weeks. Though until I get my RAID up and running it will be even quieter than I had planned. Hope you all stick around, subscribe to the blog so you get notifications for when I do post, and I will be back with a lot more regular content in the near future, probably around the September time frame, but hopefully some good teasers before then too.

Construction Ahead

I’ve been fighting with my decade+ old template here on WordPress, which is no longer officially supported, to get some formatting right for new posts, to no avail. So time for some changes to a more modern template, but that will take a few days to fix up all the old posts to conform to the new style so please ignore the mess as edit everything to make it look decent again. Also with that the access URL for the blog will likely change as well to a custom domain. Hopefully those that subscribe will get updated links with the notifications. Thanks to everyone who’s been hanging in there with me.

And the years, they ran like rabbits

I hang my head in shame… It has been over a decade since my last post here. Life pulls us in different directions, and inspirations come and go. Sadly this blog fell by the wayside in the wake of life. I’m going to try to change that. Hopefully by opening up what kind of content I write about here, will make it easier to have more content, and get into the swing of posting regularly.

Back on the air

Sorry for all the static folks. Personal and financial setbacks have forced me to put the project on hold for a while. Rest assured it is not dead, just delayed, and will be getting back up and running in the near future, with perhaps a slight shift in direction, but we’ll see when we get there 🙂 [I know I said this before, but this time I mean it… I promise!]
Also, while I initially planned on having this blog for the laser rebuild project only, I’ve decided to expand my content and include some of the other projects I’m working on [or rather planning to], or dreaming up 🙂 I will mostly keep the projects centric around making, or tools for making (like the laser), to keep a general theme for the blog. This will help keep some form of content flowing for the few of you that are following along, and allow me to document some more of the things that interest me.
Stay tuned, more to come!

In the meantime
Here is another LASER re-build I’m somewhat involved with.

It’s a *slightly* larger scale than the one I personally have. 😉

The Living Dead
Okay it’s been quite a while since I last posted. The project has come to a bit of a standstill, only due to a lack of time, and budget. The holidays were busier than I had expected, and I had a car accident between Christmas and New Years which ate into my budget for buying parts. So while things are on hold for the moment, the project is far from dead. I’m still working on various solutions for some aspects, and will be posting again soon. I also expect the actual re-build process to start in the near future. So please hang in there, the ride is about to start.
