Ouch my eye!

Do not look at LASER with remaining eye!

State of the Elephant

After a 10+ year hiatus, I should probably address the elephant in the room that was the genesis for this blog, the LASER rebuild. So this is a quick update for those that are subscribed and have been following, or may stumble across this down the road. Those that have followed along from the beginning have rightly thought the project is dead. In reality it’s not dead, at least not entirely, it’s mostly dead, but not ALL dead, and it might take a visit from Miracle Max to revive it.

Shortly after I restarted this blog the last time things drastically turned for the worse at my work, and over the course of a several years the business declined to the point of shuttering. While this was happening, I was having to take on more and more work, as we were losing employees. Ultimately that left me with no time or energy to work on the LASER. Then when the business shut down entirely, I lost the space I was using to work on it (and other projects, including a massive CNC machine I was rebuilding with modern controls) Ultimately I had to pack up what I could before the locks were changed. I ended up leaving behind the CNC machine… I had no place to put it (over 3000lb of cast iron), and wasn’t able to sell it in time. Also ended up leaving behind the chassis of the laser, for the same reason, but I did box up and take most of the other salvageable parts. So ultimately it is on hold until I can find a space to work on it again. Unfortunately I have no garage at my house, or other space I can tinker in on long term projects. So out of necessity the project remains boxed and in storage in the basement. Needless to say, it is on indefinite hiatus for the time being.

In the meantime I have been accumulating parts, and tools, to aid in the project, and others, once I can work on it again. So the dream is alive, just dormant for now. I plan to move this summer/fall so hopefully I’ll be able to find a new space that includes a shop space where I can set-up for projects like the laser. Until then, I’m largely constrained to virtual efforts, like software hacking, and perhaps some small microcontroller based projects.
